Orwell & Atlee inspired humane socialist child of the 1950s

Retired former social worker and elected Labour councillor in Merseyside (Liverpool region) England. Wide ranging interests clustered around twentieth century social history. I developed a horrified fascination with prewar eugenics whilst undertaking a part-time MA some 30 years ago and still nurse an ambition to explore this further at PhD level. I was particularly struck by extent to which the intelligentsia from both the left and the right endorsed this pseudo science whilst the horny handed sons and daughters of toil (the labour and trades union movement) were not taken in. Shades to me of Orwell/Winston Smith's belief that if there's any hope it lies with the proles.
